Hi, my name is Samaki Buford I’m an African American young male, my family is middle class. My life as being an African American has been really hard; discrimination has been a big thing for a while now. The community I live in is majority of black people so I usually wake up to hear police sirens and ambulances, which means, something is going on all the time in my neighborhood or close to my neighborhood. I’ve learned to ignore those sirens and those helicopters that keeps repeating the same message “come out with your hands up or we will send in the dogs, and the dogs will bite you”, and understand what this world is coming to and I eventually fall back asleep. But on the other hand I go to a school where there is no violence, where they allow you to express yourself without identifying you by your skin color.
My world today is as bad and similar to the problems that we had in the past, the only that changed were a few laws and the president, but the world hasn’t changed much. This world that I live in today inspired me to be me, to learn myself and learn to not care about how people identify me. My dreams are shaped as well as my aspiration by the world, to prove that I can do it, I can become whatever I want to pursue in life.
My dreams are also shaped by the discrimination to show that my skin color shouldn’t define who I ‘am nor who I want to be. My dreams are to be a person others look up to and say “I can do that” not only do I want people to know how hard I work to get to the place I want to be.
Like I said before I want to be a mentor to people who are incapable to express themselves for them, not to prove anything to anyone, I want to show people its okay to be you and that you can pursue your dreams whatever you’re: gay, straight, black, white. Wanting to lead by example is my main focus and mentoring people who are scared to be themselves is what my aspiration in life is and to stop discrimination against not only race but gender and many other things. I would like to leave my mark on the world.
